When I was in high school glee club, we sang a song whose chorus went "funiculi, funicula...love is in the air ..funiculi, funicula" I've learned on this trip what funiculi are. They are a type of cable car that moves people between the bottom and top of a steep hill. Since many of the little towns we have visited in Italy are on hilltops, we have ridden several funiculi. We rode the funicular system most recently in the Umbrian capital of Perugia. Perugia has a 1.5 mile automatic people mover, a type of funiculi called the minimetro, that links the city center on top of a hill to a large parking area on the foot of the hill.

The song was composed to commemorate the opening of the first
funicular cable car on
Mount Vesuvius. The 1880 cable car was later destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 1944.
